Nagatoro is a small mountain village located in Chichibu. The Arakawa river which flows through the town is excellent for whitewater rafting, of the ordinary kind, but visitors can also experience a more traditional wooden boat style of rafting as well. The traditional rafting involves boarding a wooded boat controlled a 'driver' with a long wooden pole. The boat then cruises, mostly peacefully, down the river, giving you ample opportunity to take in the incredible scenery of the area.

Nagatoto TSC Trip Rafting

2011 TSC trip to Nagatoro

After the traditional rafting we will be having lunch in Nagatoro before exploring the town for an hour or so. While only a small riverside village, the main street of Nagatoro is a paved, pedestrian only strip packed with great restaurants and interesting shops selling local produce and souvenirs etc. There are many great swimming holes for those who feel like cooling off in the river and we can also visit an incredibly beautiful and colorful shrine nestled at the base of the Mt. Hodo, a short walk from the main street.

Nagatoro Rafting

Cruising down the Arakawa River

The Arakawa river and Nagatoro gorge area is a very picturesque and tranquil place - a great place to while a way a few relaxing Saturday afternoons hours picnicing by and playing in the river.

Before leaving Nagatoro we will stop off at a great local Onsen to soak and refresh ourselves for the trip home. The onsen features both indoor and outdoor hot springs in a natural setting in the mountains. Its quite a unique onsen in that the outdoor springs are right in front of a waterfall - a beautiful place for an onsen! The onsen also features a large chill out room with a quite lively stage Karaoke setup where the locals love to belt out classic Japanese Enka tunes. We can relax here with a cold drink before heading back to Tokyo.

Looking forward to a fun day in Nagatoro!
