Zao Onsen Snow Monster Festival

Zao Onsen Snow Monster Festival

Snow Monster festival at the massive Zao Onsen Ski Resort! The festival features the snow monster illuminations, a fireworks show, ice sculptures and more.

Overview

Zao Onsen is a huge ski resort featuring 4 gondolas, 41 lifts and a super long 10km course stretching from one side of the mountain to the other! There is a large variety of courses perfect for beginners, intermediates and experts. The location of the resort means that Zao receives massive snowfalls each year. The consistently great pow and the sheer size and number of courses of the resort make it a must visit.

Every winter, Siberian winds and heavy snowfall unique to this area, sees the Zao mounatin area covered in a sea of towering snow monsters. Hundreds of trees are glazed with snow and ice, morphing them into a sea of snow and ice towers resembling monsters. Skiing/snowabording through the  spectacular snow monsters adds another dimension of exciement to the day while non-skiiers can also access the monsters by a ropeway and a gondola.

This trip coincides with the annual Snow Monster Fesitval which features snow monster illuminations, a fireworks show, ice sculptures and more.

Our lodge for the trip is ski-in ski-out - right in front of the lifts! This trip is one of our most popular and books out well in advance every year. We are unable to add extra spaces so please book asap if you are keen to experience the Zao Onsen Snow Monsters.

This is my second time here with TSC! Embarking on a 2-day journey to Zao with Tokyo Snow Club was nothing short of exhilarating. Zao is famed for its expansive ski slopes, vibrant culture, and iconic Snow Monsters—trees adorned with heavy snowfall, sculpted into fantastical shapes by nature's whims. Our trip began with reconnecting with old friends and making new ones within the TSC community, fostering a warm camaraderie amidst the snowy landscapes. Skiing enthusiasts like myself found paradise on Zao's slopes, where we challenged ourselves on every run and celebrated breaking personal speed records—a thrilling highlight of the trip. The crown jewel of Zao's winter spectacle, the Snow Monsters, left us awe-struck. These majestic, snow-covered trees stood as silent sentinels against the wind, their eerie yet beautiful forms a testament to nature's artistry. Attending the Snow Monster Festival was a sensory delight. We immersed ourselves in a magical evening of fire shows, captivating music performances, a lively skier party, and culminating fireworks that painted the night sky in vibrant colors. No trip to Zao is complete without indulging in its relaxing onsen baths, where we soaked away the day's adventures amid serene mountain views. Zao, with its blend of adrenaline-pumping activities and cultural richness, proved to be a perfect getaway. Each moment, from conquering slopes to experiencing local festivities, etched unforgettable memories of Japan's winter wonderland.

Great trip, stayed at a ski in ski out hotel which was super convenient. Breakfast was included (vegetarian accomodations available) but dinner was not (there are a number of restaurants nearby though). The hotel only had 2 shower rooms total so we ended up using public baths/onsens instead -- this probably changes per trip depending on which hotel has availability. Snow monsters were cool but the weather wasn't great the weekend I went. The festival is about an hour long with a couple show/events and fireworks. Bus ride is pretty long but we had 2 rest stops each way. Our tour leaders made sure no one got left behind, and were available for questions or requests all trip. They clearly communicated meeting times and hotel / ski / local info. They also let me move my one day rental to be for Sunday instead of Saturday.

Zao Onsen is amazing! The view is incredible, going all the way to the top I was speechless. And as always, TSC know how to have a fun night after a day hitting the slopes.

Best powder snow ever in two winter seasons! I have never seen this much fatty snow monsters. The view from the lift near the top was absolutely amazing. Leader has lots of information about the slopes and where to grab a delicious lunch and dinner. (Yum yum) Zao onsengai is an another world. I felt like I was in “Sen to Chihiro” movie. I’m already looking forward to coming back to Zao next year. Hopefully with fireworks. Thanks to all the friendly Tokyo Snow Club staff to make our trip so much fun!
